Thesis.
Camus shows the evolution of Meursault's thoughts through several mediums, using him to set the tone for the story and push Camus's own outlook to the forefront of the novel.
Meursault's relationship with Marie helps to illustrate how he grows to accept the absurdity of the universe; his incarceration helps him to realize his own beliefs, which are confirmed by society's attempts to make him "like them"; and finally, Meursault's aversion to heat illustrates that the physical elements of the world are much more burdensome to him than the emotional ones.
